Korean Starcraft Pro-League Crumbles

It’s been announced today that the war between Kespa and Blizzard has torn apart the Korean pro-circuit. Kespa is the corporation who both created and funds Korean pro-Starcraft, and reaps the rewards of massive industry profits. Blizzard does not receive any of the cut from these profits, aside from sales of their game.

Enter GOM-TV, one of the largest televisers of Korean pro-gaming. Many began following it around the world when Tasteless and Super-Daniel Man had been hired on as dedicated English voice-casters, with matches displayed online for free (or in high quality with paid subscription) on GOMTV.net

At some point during GOM-TV season 3 it became noticed that Blizzard had become a major sponsor of GOM. Kespa teams and players regularly compete on GOM and provide the most desired match-ups. While the full story has yet to be revealed either from Blizzard or Kespa, it seems that negotiations for Blizzard to receive a cut of the televised profits have completely deteriorated. In response, Blizzard has used its sponsorshiip with GOM-TV to force GOM to ban any Kespa teams from competing on their station(*update - it is rumored that it is in fact Kespa who has banned it’s own players from appearing on GOM and not the other way around). The only way to appear on GOM currently is to break ties with Kespa, therefore completely relinquishing one’s status as a pro-gamer in Korea.

Blizzard has been motioning to funnel a world-wide eSports market through its new up and coming service, Battle.net 2.0, and there were already major concerns about what this would mean to Korean corporate owned pro-gaming.

We hope to hear more announcements soon, and I will report here when that occurs.
